MONTHLY MUSIC & TIPS:
MONTHLY MUSIC & TIPS:
HYFRYDOL is one of the most loved Welsh tunes. It was composed by Rowland Hugh
Prichard in 1830 when he was nineteen. It was published with about forty of his other tunes in his children’s hymnal Cyfaill y Cantorion (The Singers’ Friend) in 1844.
Prichard (sometimes spelled Pritchard) (1811–1887) was a textile worker and an amateur musician. He had a good singing voice and was appointed precentor (cantor) in Graienyn. Many of his tunes were published in Welsh periodicals.
The hymn tune HYFRYDOL (Welsh for “tuneful” or “pleasant”) is associated with several hymn lyrics, including Alleluia! Sing to Jesus, Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus, Love Di-vine, All Loves Excelling, and Jesus! What a Friend for Sinners!
The hymn tune is easy to sing because the entire melody consists of the first six notes of the scale.
This organ arrangement by Dan Miller is accessible for the average organist and could serve as an organ solo or as an organist's improvisation for congregational singing.
